Quarantine Book Club: "Dracula"
In the weeks leading up to Halloween, we will transport ourselves to Transylvania. Beware of bats.
Earnest, in-the-dark Jonathan Harker records his impressions of a frightening stay at Dracula's Castle. When the focus shifts to Lucy Westenra-who has three suitors, a sleepwalking habit, and eventually two small wounds on her neck-a remote mystery becomes a global horror.
Bram Stoker's 1897 novel is the first legitimate page-turner of the Quarantine Book Club. A classic of Gothic fiction, with annoyingly Victorian attitudes toward religion and women, it is a surprisingly easy, contemporary read.
Weekly lectures will be delivered by Christopher Frizzelle, followed by open discussion. If you miss any sessions, no problem: a recording of each session will be sent to ticket-holders automatically.
We will read approximately 75 pages a week, and gather on Monday evenings to discuss. On the last night of class, the universe will darken one hour earlier.
