A FrizzLit Christmas Carol with Charles Dickens
Monday evenings, 6 pm to 8 pm Pacific, Dec 5-Dec 19, 2022
Experience A Christmas Carol as you never have before.
Over three December Mondays, we will read aloud the classic Christmas fable, except we will use the condensed text Charles Dickens created to perform for adoring crowds. This is a different version of the text than you find in books.
Literary explorer Christopher Frizzelle and culinary adventurer Audrey Van Buskirk team up to host this special holiday book club—with no weekly reading assignments!
For this club, you also don't need to buy a book: you will receive a PDF copy in advance. Before our first meeting, you will also receive a cookbook featuring recipes created for this club. Like reading aloud, it's optional to make food and drinks to accompany our Zoom meetings, but it could make the darkest month of the year more festive. If you would like to be one of the people reading the text aloud, there will be an opportunity to volunteer.
At our first meeting, we will dive into the Past, exploring the life and times and food and libations of Dickens and his contemporaries in London circa 1843, and wander through the fascinating backstory to how A Christmas Carol was written, and how it was initially kind of a disaster for its author and publisher.
In our second meeting, we'll move to the Present, discussing the more than 135 versions of A Christmas Carol and how the world Dickens describes continues to shape our experience of the holiday today.
For our final meeting, we will look to the Future, imagining how this shared, sensory experience of the story will carry us into the New Year and beyond.
We are hoping to arrange a discount on tickets to Seattle Rep’s production of “Mr. Dickens and His Carol” (Nov. 25-Dec. 23), based on Samantha Silva’s novel, for members of this club.
We hope you can join us live, but if you're called away by holiday duties or demanding ghosts, never fear! Recordings of all meetings will be sent to all ticketholders automatically.
You don't need to buy a book for this club! You will get a PDF of the text that we will be reading aloud over three weeks.
If you would like to join this class but price is a barrier, sponsorship funds are available to help make it possible. Please apply here.
If you choose to pay $125 for this club, you are automatically making a $50 donation to the financial assistance fund. If you choose to pay $175, you are making a $100 donation. Thank you for making this book club accessible to more people.
