Elliott Bay Book Company presents Alicia Garza: The Purpose of Power Book Event (in conversation with Angela Rye)
Fri, Oct 23, 2020 at 7pm (Pacific)
Alicia Garza's honest and original narrative THE PURPOSE OF POWER: How We Come Together When We Fall Apart (One World Hardcover) is a twenty-first-century organizer's manifesto that draws on this generation's particular strengths and challenges us to create a new paradigm for change. It is an essential guide to building the type of movements that can address the challenges of our time, from one of the country's leading organizers — one of the creators of Black Lives Matter. She joins us virtually to speak about her book in conversation with Angela Rye. This event is co-produced by Elliott Bay Book Company with support from the Northwest African American Museum (https://www.naamnw.org/) and Langston (https://www.langstonseattle.org/). A portion of the ticket proceeds will be donated to each organization.
Long before #BlackLivesMatter became a rallying cry for this generation, Alicia Garza spent the better part of two decades learning and unlearning some hard lessons about how to come together when things around us are falling apart. The lessons she offers are different from the "rules for radicals" that animated earlier generations of activists, and diverge from the charismatic, patriarchal model of the American Civil Rights Movement. From this, she offers reflections on how making room amongst the woke for those who are still waking can inspire and activate more and more people to join the fight for the world we all deserve.
Alicia Garza is an organizer, political strategist, and cheeseburger enthusiast. She is the Principal at the Black Futures Lab and the Black to the Future Action Fund, co-creator of #BlackLivesMatter and the Black Lives Matter Global Network, Strategy & Partnerships Director at the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and host of the Lady Don't Take No podcast.
