Thank you to everyone who has been a part of BFF over the past 25 years. Let's celebrate! Bikes Rock!

In 2001, Brendt Barbur was hit by a bus while riding his bicycle in New York City. Insisting on turning this negative experience into a positive one, Barbur founded the Bicycle Film Festival (BFF) as a global celebration of bicycles through film, art, music, and culture.

Since its start, BFF has been hosted in more than 100 cities worldwide, reaching over one million people. BFF has partnered with prestigious art institutions such as the Sydney Opera House, the Barbican, the Andy Warhol Museum, and the MCA Chicago, as well as with cities like Tokyo, Istanbul, Paris, London, New York, and Mexico City. Each year, BFF features a curated selection of films—including documentaries, narratives, and animations—from both award-winning and emerging directors. The festival also hosts immersive music performances, art exhibitions, and culinary experiences. Notable artists such as Erykah Badu, Kaws, Albert Maysles, Neistat Brothers, Karl Lagerfeld, Shepard Fairey, Mike Mills, Paul Smith, Tom Sachs, Ridley Scott, Kiki Smith, Ai Weiwei and Spike Jonze have participated in the BFF.

Brian Vernor was raised in Santa Cruz, CA and now works out of Los Angeles. His early cycling documentaries and photography lead to commercial and editorial commissions from Rapha, Nike, Giro, Saucony, NBC, D Magazine, BIKE, and Outside, among others. Brian's interest in custom bicycles and industrial design lead him to create documentary and advertising films focussed on design teams at Casper, Alphabet, MillerKnoll and Design Within Reach. He balances commercial projects in both design and sports with personal film projects.

BFF is a proud to present a selection of works by Brian Vernor. These shorts and feature length films screened at the BFF around the world from 2005 through today:

WHERE ARE YOU GO
Canada 2009 | 62min.
Dir. Brian Vernor & Benny Zenga
Four months on a bicycle between Cairo, Egypt and Cape Town, South Africa en route with the Tour d' Afrique, the world's longest bicycle race and expedition. BFF Alumni the Zenga Brothers and Brian Vernor share a universal love of the bicycle with Africa's roadside mechanics, sporting racers and curious strangers. Traveling more than 70 miles per day, 50 racers and expedition riders experienced the boundless Nubian desert of Sudan, the great majesty of Victoria Falls, and finally the cold rush of the Atlantic Ocean. The 7,000 mile expedition is a constant adventure full of playfulness and mysterious beauty, and is testament to the endurance of human curiosity.

PURE SWEET HELL
USA 2005 | 62min.
Dir. Brian Vernor & Willie K. Bullion
Bullion and Vernor take their cues from Surf Films and Classic Cycling Films to present one of the fastest growing bicycling sports in the United States. Shot entirely on Super 8 and incorporating a mix of instrumental rock music, voice over interviews, and constructed sound it digs deep into the cold, muddy, and anything but relaxing sport of Cyclocross. This film is an insider’s view that gives an intimate look with a human touch that any outsider could appreciate.

HWY 395 (REVISITED)
USA 2017 | 3min.
Dir. Brian Vernor
The Eastern Sierras along the Highway 395 corridor called out to us for an end-of-Summer road trip out of Los Angeles. Super 8 and super rad.

HI LO CALI
USA 2018 | 11min.
Dir. Brian Vernor
